STORY | ||||||||
A native of Tennessee, son of Lloyd and Ethel Fuller Abercrombie, Rufus enlists in the US Army in early 1943 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
There, begins a new training phase, more intensive, with a view to the great preparation for D-Day. On June 7, in the end of the afternoon, the 2nd Infantry Division «Indian Head» lands on Omaha Beach, Easy Red sector. The 9th Infantry Regiment «The Manchu Regiment», to which Rufus belongs, is the first to land. The regiment's first mission is to clean out the remaining pockets of resistance near the beach between Vierville and Saint-Laurent.
It relieves elements from the 1st Infantry Division in Engranville and Mandeville.Early in the afternoon, the 2nd battalion faces heavy artillery fire while crossing the Aure River. Grounded for the whole afternoon, it only manages to move in the evening. E Company loses 20 men. In the evening, when the fighting resume, an incorrectly adjusted artillery barrage hits the Command Post killing 17 men. The 3rd battalion attacked on the Mandeville-Rubercy road dead-on. In the Haut Hameau village, the Germans artillery barraged, a company loses 20 men. Early in the evening, following artillery fire, American troops attack once again, the German resistance is now weak. The battalion is able to approach and take a stand in Rubery. Rufus lost his life for our freedon on this day of terrible fighting. | ||||||||
