Sgt Ahlgrim was born November 10th, 1916 in Denver, Colorado and killed in action [penetrating wounds via artillery shell/frags] on Tuesday July 4th, 1944 during the invasion of Normandy. Sgt Ahlgrim is the son of Frederick John Ahlgrim [4/6/1890 Missouri died 10/24/60 ] a brick-mason and the son of Mary Eva Worthington Ahlgrim [1891 Kansas died between 1920 -1930] The 1930 US Census of Gary, Lake County, Indiana shows Robert residing at 3611 9th Ave, Gary with his father, stepmother [Evelyn C Benson Ahlgrim] brother William [Oct 10, 1919 in Colorado died 1/24/88] . Sgt Ahlgrim enlisted in the Army on April 2nd, 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. His enlistment record states that Robert had completed 2 years of high-school was 5’8’’ 135lbs with blue eyes and blonde hair with a scar behind his right ear and was single. Sgt Ahlgrim married Irene Uhrinchak, a son Robert was born of this marriage. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
During Operation Neptune, June 6th, 1944 Sgt Ahlgrim parachuted from his C-47 Troop Transport plane with Tail#423332/Chalk #16/pushmaster Sgt Ahlgrim was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Croix de Guerre Unit Citation [French] European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with Bronze Service Star and Arrowhead, WW2 Victory Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button, Parachute Badge, Combat Infantryman Badge/Bronze Star [sans V] and the Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem. |
