Private Frist Class Gaylord Arthur Reeder born 14 Jan 1918 in Beecher City, Effingham County, Illinois, was the son of Merrill C and Myrtle May (Hackney) Reeder of Beecher City. Beecher City is in south central Illinois 15 mi WNW of Effingham and 97 mi NE of St Louis, Mo. He left a wife, Mary Louise in Beecher City.
In the 1920 census 2-year-old Gaylord is living with his parents and siblings Carl 16, Cleta 14, Glen 13, Earl 10, Alma 7, and Otis 3, in unincorporated Beecher City, Liberty Township, Effingham County, Illinois. His father is farming.
In the 1930 census 12-year-old Gaylord is living with his parents and siblings Carl 27, Otis 14, Roy 7, and William 3, still in Beecher City. His father is a section foreman on a railroad.
Gaylord’s mother died 31 Aug 1936 at the age of 53.
Gaylord and Mary Louise were married sometime before the 1940 census. I never found her maiden name.
In the 1940 census Gaylord and Mary Lou 19, are living with his widowed father and siblings Roy 17, Billie 13, in Beecher City. His father is still working on the railroad. In 1935 Mary Lou lived in Marion County, Illinois. Marion County is 35 miles south of Beecher City.
Reeder was part of the 593rd Motor Ambulance Company in Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army. When men were wounded, they were brought to a collection point. From there, Reeder helped transport them to an evacuation hospital. At one point, his unit drove up on a field near Malmedy, Belgium, where retreating Germans had slaughtered about 85 American prisoners of war and left the bodies.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Illinois show Reeder, Gaylord A, Pfc from Fayette County as DNB (Died Non-Battle) so he died in the line of duty from some illness or accident on 24 Sep 1945 some 128 days after the end of hostilities on VE Day May 8, 1945.
