STORY
Private Richard Lee Smith, born 8 May 1916, was the son of Bertha “Bertie” Florence Smith of Keyser, Mineral County, West Virginia. Keyser is on the North Branch of the Potomac River 22 mi SW of Cumberland, Maryland. He left a wife, Mary, and son, Ronald, in Keyser.
In the 1920 census 3-year-old Richard is living with his mother, two aunts, and four cousins at 319 West Piedmont Street in Keyser, Mineral County, WV. I did not find anything on his father.
In the 1930 census 13-year-old Richard is living with his mother Bertie 39, in the household of his paternal Aunt Mary M Smith 65, Aunt Rose O’Leary and cousins John 22, Charles 18, and Neal 14, at 319 West Piedmont Street in Keyser, Mineral County, WV. Aunt Mary is a “Sweeper” for a steam railroad. His cousins work in a silk mill.

In the 1940 census 23-year-old Richard is still living at 319 W Piedmont with his mother, Bertie 49, and Aunt Mary 75, with cousins John 32 and Charles 28. Richard is a textile worker in a rayon plant.
On his Oct 1940 draft registration 24-year-old Richard is still living at 319 Piedmont in Keyser and working at Celanese Corporation in Cumberland Md.
Richard married Mary Elizabeth Spurling sometime before 1944.
28-year-old Richard enlisted or was inducted in May 1944. His job at Celanese must have been important to the war effort to keep him out of the service until May 1944. He was assigned to the 3050th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company.
