| KELBAUGH, Elmer M., Private, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, Service #33874181, State of Entry: Pennsylvania, Death: 25-August-1944 Parents, William Melchor and Edith Jones Kelbaugh Wife, Mildred Miller Kelbaugh | |||||||||||||||||||||||
PVT Elmer Melchoir Kelbaugh was born on February 24, 1914 in Texas, Maryland to William Melchoir and Edith Mae (Jones) Kelbaugh. His father worked as a farm laborer in Baltimore County and later on his own farm in York County, Pennsylvania. Elmer married Mildred Saranda Miller on November 17, 1934. Their first daughter, Dorothy Marie Kelbaugh, was born and died in June of the following year. Another daughter was born in 1937, and a son joined the family in 1940. Elmer worked at the American Insulator factory in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. Elmer was drafted in December 1943 and trained at Fort Meade, Maryland and Camp Blanding, Florida as the regiment had done in 1942, then sent to Europe in July 1943. On August 7, 1944, he was transferred from the replacement depot to the I Company 116th. Infantry. Originally thought to be missing in action (and possibly a POW), he was later confirmed to have been killed in action on August 25, 1944. The question of his burial can be confusing. There is a grave at the Brittany American Cemetery. There is a cenotaph that has been registered as a burial at Bethlehem Steltz Reform Cemetery in Steltz, Pennsylvania. Her sister, Virgina Kelbaugh, served as Yeoman 1C in the US Navy at Pearl Harbor after entering service in 1942. Mildred remarried in 1948. |
